On March 6, 2016, the Government of Ontario announced “It’s Never Okay: An Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment. Building on that commitment, the Province introduced Bill 132, An Act to amend various statutes with respect to sexual harassment, domestic violence and related matters on October 27, 2015. The legislation would impact residential tenancies, in addition to a variety of other applications, with respect to sexual harassment and domestic violence.
LSHC provided comments to the Standing Committee on Social Policy on Schedule 6 of Bill 132 with respect to amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act during their examination of the Bill following Second Reading. LSHC raised concern with respect to the voidability of the termination notice and the landlord’s ability to enter to show the rental unit to prospective tenants.
Bill 132 passed Third Reading and received Royal Assent on March 8, 2016. Bill 132 amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act came into force on September 8, 2016.
